Awesome... where is "here"? I would like to see Jo Shishido live. That man is so friggin cool. The last movie I saw him in was Flower and Snake 2 and though he must be like 250 years old now he still played "hide the snake" with Aya Sugimoto. Jo is a hero!
By the way, FaS2 also featured my favourite modern day equivalent of Kunie Tanaka - Kenichi Endo. He must be in every japanese movie I've seen in the last ten years..... |

Michael - where can we find info on this "Shishido" book tour? I assume if he's hitting the east coast (USA) he'll be in NYC (fingers crossed). I know M. Schilling has been here and if memory is correct (which it isn't most of the time) he's on the board of the Asian film festival they usually have in the summer in NYC.

Jo Shishido coming to the US? Cool. If you have more info, please let us know. Would definitely be worth a trip to NY if he comes there.
I got the Nikkatsu book yesterday. Read about half of it. Big disappointment: lack of any bibliography. Yes, probably would have been mostly, if not all, Japanese, but there is at least one book about Nikkatsu posters I would like to track down if possible. As for the Chris D book, I search the net occasionally, but no go so far. I too am looking forward to it. Chris D seems to be a big fanboy of the genre and he's knowledgeable. Should be a big treat once it is published. Edit: Did a search again and came across this from November: newtextureblog.blogspot.c...sword.html Basically not coming out anytime soon. Too bad. |

cig - (regarding Gun and Sword) let me be the first to say this, "that f***in sucks!"
Just recieved my copy of schill's new book today. First words, small. Second word(s), looks f'n cool. Has nice b/w & colorful pics & posters. Chapters are broken down by actors and directors with a history of the company. Looks like an excellent read and anyone interested in the genre should sell blood to get the book. just my 2 pennies. |

cig... these are probably the Nikkatsu poster books you're looking for. You might be able to find them on Yahoo auctions but they are really hard to find. I got mine from a recycle book store. It's taken 2 years of regular visits to find 11 of these books and there are a lot more out there. Usually 5000 yen each too, so they're not cheap.

Trooper,
I agree about the "Guns & Sword" book. Having to wait at least another year really does suck. Although if he can get it published at around 500-550 pages with poster repros (hopefully many in color), it would probably be worth the wait. I'm just impatient. Yeah, the Schilling book is kinda small (something I should have realized if I had bothered to look more closely at the description on Amazon), but no matter. It's nicecly organized and lots of cool pics. While I still wish there had been a bibliography, I agree that it is most definitely worth picking up. I hope to finish reading it this weekend. |

marukomu,
You have 11 of these and there are lots more??!! Great covers! These appear to be available on Amazon Japan. 4395 yen, so yeah not exactly inexpensive, about $45 apiece before shipping. Still..... |

I have 2 Nikkatsu, 1 Shintoho, 3 Jidaigeki, 2 Toei action, 2 Daiei and another I can't think of at the moment. I am planning to buy another one when I get paid.
It's a shame I can't scan them as it would mean bending the spines to do it. |

I wrote a review for Mark Schilling's book on Amazon, which I am still standing by. Here's the review:
"Kudos and accolades are in order for Mr. Schilling's herculean efforts in helping to spread the word regarding the wonderful world of Nikkatsu Action Cinema to English-speaking movie buffs! This book is an absolutely marvelous introduction to a sadly overlooked body of brilliant, vibrant films that are every bit as exciting and entertaining today as they were in Nikkatsu studio's glory days of the 1950's and 1960's. The text is as crisp and clean as one of Ishihara Yujiro's suits and reads as smoothly as ace killer, Shishido Jo, can dispatch a contract. And if that isn't reason enough to snag a copy of this book ASAP-- the many photo illustrations are more than worth the price of admission. Excellent stuff! Arigato gozaimasu, Mark Schilling-san!!" Mark told me that he could have, and would have, written a much larger book but the folks at FAB Press wanted a small volume. I am hoping that Mark gets the chance to write another book on Nikkatsu Action cinema...because there is a whole heck of a lot more to the subject than he was allowed to cover in NO BORDERS NO LIMITS. Those Nikkatsu Action Poster books are EXCELLENT, by the way! I highly recommend them to any and all fans. I've noticed these are often available on eBay at very reasonable prices via a couple of fine sellers from Japan. I have picked up a few extra copies over the past few months and never paid more than $50.00 for each one (including EMS shipping fees!). That is certainly better than the $60.00 starting price that YesAsia has on them. BUT..they are definitely worth the $60.00 in my humble opinion. Anybody aware of any poster books that might contain posters for some of Toei's "hard-boiled" action films like HANA TO ARASHI TO GANGYU and the Takakura/Tsuruta "Ankokugai" series? I'd love to snag something like that! Jya mata! Chris (Oyabun no Yaju no Yabai Gumi) |

Just finished Marc's book. As Denny Green would say (for those who don't know who he is, he was an NFL head coach who is used in those coors lite
commercials), "It was what I thought it was". I'd say it was a very nice introduction book into the genre. Definitely worth the buy for
chanbara/yakuza/action afficionados of that time. I look forward to more books from Marc.

Finished mine last weekend. Great read, he knows his stuff and has a good writing style. According to a source of mine, my old review of his Yakuza-Eiga book
on supertoni.ch didn't please Schilling a lot, though actually I love it and it's a great source of information, but what I wrote there, goes for this
book as well... It's just to short! I know (or guess) it's not his fault and I'm extremely glad we get anything on the genre... but it's just
so frustrating. F.e. when reading about the Gambler-Movies Akira Koyabashi made (which I've never heard of before) I would like to read so much more on
them or of course a little more on the "Burai"-Movies (I saw three of them and Marcs right, when he notes, that they foreshadow some of Fukasakus
work to come - yes, they really are that good). I know it isnt called "The Nikkatsu Yakuza-Eiga Book" and I'm aware of the influence editors do
have, so dont take me wrong, great book, but it kept me wanting much, much more. Hard to please, I guess. But I love to dream...

ISBNs for the poster books would be nice. I know about some of them, but not all. I suspect some are out of print. I will look on Amazon.jp again and check
YeasAsia and even Ebay too.
As for the length of the Schilling Nikkatsu book, it's too bad FAB wanted a small one. I guess they thought there wouldn't be a huge audience for a book on the subject and wanted to keep the cost down, which makes sense. Still most definitely worth having though. Schilling's book does have lots of good info on a subject about which there isn't much available in English and the pictures are great. I do wish they would release more of the films here or in Europe. But probably won't happen. As far as I can tell, not that many are currently available on DVD in Japan. If I am wrong, someone please correct me. I have thought about getting some of the Akira Kobayashi films. Although most of the ones of his that are currently available are those in the "Wanderer/Rambler" series, there are a few that aren't. |

Finally this book has reached the cold city of Moscow and warmed my weekend. Very good, excellently written, greatly enjoyable, to say in one word. A lot of
information and fine illustrations (some of them with Kaji, who has a special, though short, section). Still, I'm a complaining type and here are some
things to complain about (not Mr.Schilling's fault, anyway).
Yes, I'd love it to be twice as long as it is (at least). May be we'll get another edition, a fuller one? But it's a demand to publishers. It's a pity that of so many titles mentioned by Schilling we have an opportunity to watch next to nothing. Will somebody release "Burai" series or "My colt is my passport" or at least a dozen of such gems? And finally it would be good to read more about Yumiko Nogawa. Yes, Meiko Kaji is great, but Nogawa in Suzuki's film is just breathtaking. By the way, I'd love to see her "Cat girl gambling" trilogy released as well. |
