These are the DVDs which seem to stand out, most of which I have either recently ordered, or already have. Now I am going to go back and peruse Chris D.'s article on Matatabi films and see if any others seem indespensable. (I know this probably belongs more in the yakuza forum, but I just like this forum better....) I am surprised that no one has picked up the Ichikawa Film for subtitling it has nothing but legendary status , myself i like it even though its very bleak and nihilistic . it was once dubbed the Easy Rider of Samurai Films . Shame that no one bought the Kogarashi Monjiro Tv series ,CK put out a couple of episodes but no one seemed interested at all ,thats a shame i saw a bunch of episodes on tv (sans subs )and thought it was great .

I bought the first volume as soon as Corey listed it as available. I will buy the second volume as soon as it is offered as well. It is one of the few jidai geki television series listed in the Dorama Encyclopedia published by Stone Bridge Press, so I decided it must have been good to have been included. Posts: 191 02/04/09 08:51:38	Kon Ichikawa's MATATABI has long been available subtitled as a 35 mm theater rental and shows from time to time on campuses or repertoiry cinemas. Its been circulating since it was a new film, but had brand new prints struck in 2001 when MoMA had its giant retrospective of the director. As Kon Ichikawa only died last year, I kind of expected a couple major cities would have retrospects with the 2001 prints. Raizo as Kutsukake Tokijiro was previously in circulation through Daiei International with subtitles, and I assume that print is now in the Pacific Archive with most of the former Daiei International collection. It's also been offered as a pirated vhs and as a transfer of that poor copy to dvd -- though I haven't seen it offered in a while one of the pirateers probably still has it available.
