(at least by Yakuza Standards )its a much better film than Hanako Kiriyuin ,its big budget has bloodshed and nudity ,catfights in Kimono's what more could you want . The Raizo film is great as well but its plays like one of those 1960 Monte Hellman Westerns with Jack Nicholson . That is not being critical far from it its a true classic though "THIRD SHADOW "is ''THE GREAT RAIZO FILM "in the whole batch . Imagine if Edogawa Ranpo wrote a jidai geki ,its a very dark twisted film .

It has been months since I bought much YE. And there is nothing much for us to discuss because there is really nothing new. Look how inactive this section has been lately. If we all knew Japanese and had money to buy stuff overseas (seems as if a good number of YE titles are being re-released in Japan) we would have more to talk about, but...... I'm not criticizing Kuro: it appears that films in other genres have larger audiences, so of course it makes more sense to focus on them. We must all be losers to love films from a relatively unpopular genre. The Gosha film sounds as if it might be worthwhile, but of course it's not exactly YE. "Lone Wolf Isazo" might be worth a look too. Anyone seen it?

Posts: 1544 02/21/09 10:12:59 Loyal Retainer (Registered User)	I'm not normally a huge fan of YE. However, I just got through watching the new release: "New Prison Walls of Abashiri 2". Great film! Now I'm going to have to check out the remainder of this series. By the way, don't be itimidated by the "2" in the title. This is a completely independent film.

I just ordered "New Abashiri Prison 1" after having watched "New Abashiri Prison 2" and enjoying it so much. I'm not sure that the main Takakura Ken character is the same in these two films. His given name is Suehiro in each of them, but it's not clear to me from the blurbs whether the family name is the same, which means that he might be two different Suehiro's (such as in the O-Katsu films, where there are two different O-Katsu's). However, according to the blurbs in the original Abashiri Prison films, the character's name is Tachibana Shinichi. So he's a different character from the "New" series.

The tone of the series changes a lot in both clutches, a couple of the first-series episodes amounting to comedies. So through the magic of copying and pasting: I received and watched the first of the "New Abashiri Prison" films. It seems that "Abashiri Prison" is a new place in each film. In this one, it's a prison run by the American occupying forces to house both American and Japanese criminals. The film starts out in an interesting fashion, showing the relationship between the American and Japanese convicts. However, about a fourth of the way through the film, it suddenly goes into a different direction when the main Takakura Ken character is released and then it becomes a conventional yakuza eiga film. I would have liked to see the film more centered on the American and Japanese convicts without the sudden change in plot direction. I actually prefered the 2nd film, which I got earlier (which is completely independent of this one and Abashiri Prison is a completely different place).
