The End has come (for awhile ) |

A Friend in Japan has informed me that save for NHK's Taiga Drama and the new Hissatsu Tv series on ASAHI . ''ALL FUTURE JIDAI GEKI /CHANBARA
PROJECTS HAVE BEEN SHELVED " Reason ,bad economy ,lack of people watching ,too expensive to make . As far as films well only ZATOICHI and 13 ASSASSINS are
the only two projects that have been greenlighted and have yet to be actually made . the number of Samurai films has got fewer and fewer with each passing year
in fact this year 09 has Zero (ICHI and 13 will not hit for another year or so ) So 2009 will be the first year in the history of JP Cinema without a new jidai
/chambara film .

That sucks!
I can only claimed to have watch a very limited number of the newer jidaigeki / chanbara, which for me includes anything released in the last twelve or
thirteen years.

I'm very sorry to see this. I've noticed that too many recent chambara/jidai-geki flicks were filled with many gimmicks i.e. O-Rin's ridiculous
skin-tight outfit in the O-Rin series. Then there have been too many "magical" ninja tricks.
The films that made it to Western release were mostly very traditional and had a lot more realism: Twilight Samurai, Hidden Blade, Zatoichi, Love and Honor. If the Japanese were to make more films like these without all the gimmicks, I think that the films would be better-received. |

2009 will have the release of the ninja epic Kamui, adapted from the classic Legend of Kamui manga. http://usagiyojimbo.com - http://usagiyojimbo.fr - http://usagiyojimbo.pl |

I'm interested in seeing the KAMUI film. I was never a big Manga fan, but I used to follow that one (and the Lone Wolf & Cub series).
I hope they don't goof it up!! Sad that they are having such a hard time getting classic samurai stuff made in Japan these days. Very sad....

Though I'm not normally a "ninja" fan as such. This one looks rather interesting, with a miminum of all of the gimmicks.

A definite shame.....I really feel Japanese cinema is struggling right now in some ways. They are going too much for the crazy, non-realistic kung-fu inspired
type of action these days in recent genre films. Recent films like Twilight Samurai, Hidden Blade, Love and Honor and a personal fav, Ame Agaru, just seem to
be dwindling away and are very much the exception to the rule it seems. It is almost like the recent young crop of up and coming Japanese filmmakers have lost
touch with their roots in classic Japanese cinema, not seeing the huge potential to bring some of that sensibility and more visceral, realistic action back
into current film. One surprising exception to this was Samurai Fiction, a film which I thought was a great homage to the genre.
Well, here is hoping things will change in the future. |

A friend sent me a fan-subbed downloaded version of ICHI, the recent film about a blind swordswoman. I saw it and I was surprised. I had gotten the idea that
it was way, way far out with lots of gimmicks. This film is a lot more "traditional" in atmosphere than I had been led to believe. I really enjoyed
it and I plan to watch it again soon.

Wave Tossed wrote:I bought it on e-bay. Not bad. She's not a total sell as a fighter but the tone and basic plot are reasonably felt and played out. While I sometimes gravitate to MACHINE GIRL and TOKYO GORE POLICE, it's the formal quality of the sword film that I return to: right now watching YAGYU CHRONICLES (Konoe version) and will go back and re-look at parts 1-4 SON OF BLACK MASS (the recent Animeigo release.) 13 Assassins with Miike directing is something I really really want to see. The original was terrific and ferocious. Hope he doesn't camp it up. |

He (Miike )is a mixed bag for sure ,but i do remember he had a Zatoichi Script that was even blessed by Katsu before he passed ,anyway long story short it was
never made because the story in a story (old Zato young Zato )format concluded with Ichi dying peacefully ,as such because he refused to change the ending it
was never filmed as Katsu's estate refused to let the title character die (guess they changed their minds by the new Toho film coming next year )
As it was it was straight Ichi no camp ,no frills . As to 13 Assassins ,Miike claims it will be traditional Chambara but the plot sounds like little to do with the Kudo Film and more like an Izo prequel . |
