The Schrader article is the seminal film comment piece that got the whole yak boom going .

Hmm, I saw the title/cover and immediately thought, well, what does this have to do with YE? But this appears to be an overview of US gangster films in
general, and the Schrader article might be worth the price of admission alone. The Fukasaku and Scorsese essay isn't too bad either. So indirect info on
YE, perhaps?
I am waiting for the Chris D book on YE, hopefully coming sometime in 2009. |

Found this on the "New Texture site, dated 11/22/2008: "He is currently finishing work on a voluminous, completist study of Japanese yakuza (gangster) films called Gun And Sword - An Encyclopedia of Japanese Gangster Films 1955-1980." Hmmm, doesn't sound as if there is much new there really..... It's been in the process of being close to finished for quite some time now, no? Well, I am still hoping it will be published, preferably sooner rather than later. |

You can always dig up the three part "Yakuza: Losers on Parade" article that Chris D. contributed to issue #3, 4,
and 5 of Asian Trash Cinema back around 1993.
Also, Cult Movies #22 from 1997 contains an article on Japanese Gangster Cinema, but I am not sure who wrote it. Cult Movies published Chris D.'s four part article on samurai related films a couple years earlier. http://usagiyojimbo.com - http://usagiyojimbo.fr - http://usagiyojimbo.pl |

I Found the Silver Book in the Library
there are three articles on Yakuza Films The seminal Shrader piece is good but now very dated ,a lot of the films Schrader raves about like the Bakuto series (of which i have 4 vhs Pre-records well soon to be had )i found overlong and boring partially due to the fact they are unsubbed and very talky . Kitano article well aside from the fact it claims Kitano made two Zatoichi Films (well if you include "getting any "that may count )it's also dated and does not include Kitano's descent into meglomania which has pretty much killed his career . And the Marty and Fuk article also very dated . |

Weird! I just read somewhere recently, forget just where, a similar comment about Kitano having done two Zatoichi films. I still have not convinced myself that
I want to watch the first one he did, let alone consider the possibility that he might have actually done another already.

michaeltr wrote:Kind of have to agree with "the descent into megalomania" comment. Kitano's films were the first YE I saw. I used to think he was ptryy good. But now....... Well, I have always wanted to post a thread regarding Kitano's yakuza films. He rarely seems to be mentioned in these forums. Perhaps I will wander over to the Yakuza forum and post. We need a new topic there ...... |
